Types Of EV Chargers

Electric vehicle chargers are not one-size-fits-all solutions. The type of charger you need will depend on your budget, how much you drive on a daily basis, what kind of property you own, and how fast you need to be able to charge your car.

Level 1

A Level 1 charger is an entry-level solution. You likely got one of these with your EV purchase, and they plug directly into a standard wall outlet. These chargers are really only effective for those who drive less than 30 to 40 miles a day. They charge at a rate of about 5 miles per hour, which means that even an overnight charging session will not fill your car all the way

Level 2

When we’re talking about EV charger installation in Tucson, usually we mean Level 2 chargers. They are capable of charging your car overnight in most circumstances. They are faster than Level 1 chargers but require a larger upfront cost. Level 2 chargers plug into 240V outlets, which are typically used for dryers.

Level 3 or DC Fast Charger

A Level 3 charger, also known as a DC fast charger, will bring an EV to a full charge in about half an hour. This is a much more powerful charger than the other two, which is why these are rarely installed in residential locations. However, they may be well-suited to a commercial property.

Why Rely On An Electrician To Install An EV Charger

  • DIY is risky: While a Level 1 charger can technically plug into a standard outlet, it’s not always safe long term.

  • Dedicated circuit needed: EV chargers should have their own circuit. Without it, you risk overloading your home’s electrical system.

  • Panel upgrades may be required: An EV charger increases your energy use - your electrical panel might need more capacity.

  • Appliance-level impact: Installing a charger is like adding a new appliance; it changes your home’s power demand.

  • Professional expertise: Volt Viking electricians know exactly what’s required to install your charger safely and correctly.

  • Peace of mind: We’ll ensure your charger fits your needs, complies with safety standards, and works seamlessly at home or your commercial property.
